Our Story
Growing up as a Somali Bantu meant surviving the civil war in the early 1990s and spending over a decade in Kenyan refugee camps. In 2001, the U.S. government began a resettlement program to provide our community with the security and protection we had long been denied. By 2003, the first wave of Somali Bantu families arrived in Phoenix, Arizona.
The transition was immediate and difficult. Our families faced daunting language barriers and struggled to navigate complex American school and government systems. Without an established community network, adapting to an urban environment was a significant hurdle for many, particularly those entering the workforce or classroom for the first time.
To meet these challenges, the Somali Bantu United Association of Greater Phoenix was established in 2009. We were founded by the community, for the community. Today, we serve as the leading advocate for Somali Bantu refugees throughout Arizona, offering specialized services and culturally sensitive programs designed to help our families integrate, contribute, and thrive in their new home.
The Somali Bantu United Association of Greater Phoenix is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization committed to the successful integration of Somali Bantu refugees into the fabric of Arizona.
Our team is driven by a commitment to excellence, employing innovative, evidence-based strategies to meet the evolving needs of our community. We pride ourselves on maintaining the highest standards of service, consistently exceeding our organizational goals to ensure impactful outcomes.
In 2026, the Somali Bantu community faces a complex landscape of systemic barriers and pressing legal challenges. While initial resettlement efforts focused on basic survival and orientation, our current priorities have expanded to address complex legal status issues, support generational transitions, and foster deeper social integration. We remain steadfast in our mission to bridge these gaps and advocate for the long-term stability of our families.
